For at least 18 days now, the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Shahbad Dairy has worked with no electricity. That’s the way school authorities and students want it. On July 16, three students suffered electric shocks while sitting in a classroom with cracked walls, dripping ceilings and flooded floors.
Two days ago, when electricity was partially restored, there wasn’t much reason to rejoice. For the 7,000 children who study here don’t just brave the possibility of electric shocks everyday, but also the risk of studying in a building termed ‘highly unstable’ and ‘earthquake prone’ by the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD).
Between March 2015 and August 2015, the school has written at least 20 letters to various government agencies including the education department, the PWD and the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (DSIIDC).
