Chairman of the Legislative Council and former Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy has expressed the need for providing moral education to students.

Inaugurating a workshop for teachers on “Active administration for quality education” here on Saturday, Mr. Shankaramurthy said this was needed in order to “improve the mental state of people.”

Despite the change in the economic condition, there was still talks about making the country sound. “This was what our forefathers were telling the youth while calling them to join the freedom struggle,” Mr. Shankarmurthy said.

He said even after six decades of freedom, the country was grappling with the issue of making itself solid and sound.

“This bothers many youngsters and they are on the streets following Anna Hazare,” he said. Mr. Shankarmurthy said there was no clarity on what children should be and should not to be taught.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said teachers should not ignore their responsibility of shaping the careers of children, regardless of problems related to late disbursal of salary and transfers. The Government, along with teachers and educational institutions, should work towards retaining the talent pool by creating better employment avenues here.

Mr. Kageri asked teachers from Dakshina Kannada to strive towards getting 100 per cent results in the Karnataka State Secondary School Examination. “I am not going into the reasons for the district going down from 8{+t}{+h} to 21{+s}{+t} position,” he said. Mr. Kageri asked teachers to identify the areas of concern and provide quality education to students. “You have to take it up as a challenge and get back the No.1 position in the next three years,” he said.

Students, who have excelled in academics, and teachers, who have contributed towards achieving good results in the SSLC examination, were felicitated. Among the students who were felicitated included Pramod N.V. and Bhargava C.S from Ramakrishna Secondary School in Puttur who secured the third prize for their eco-friendly ink in the Intel's International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angles. The heads of eight government high schools who have achieved 100 per cent results in the SSLC examination were felicitated.
