Since most private orphanages are unregistered, the government said that it becomes difficult to monitor their functioning. There are 61 licenced child institutions under Section 34 of Juvenile Justice Act for children in need of care and protection.
However, according to sources, there are more than 30 unregistered orphanages in Delhi which are not monitored.
“There is a need to make the law on both registrations and licensing of the institution very clear,” said Raaj Mangal Prasad, member of CWC. “This is not exactly an orphanage as most of the children have parents, who just left them as they couldn’t take care of them,” said a police officer. ht
