New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday directed Karnataka and Odishagovernments to submit a report on an incident in which a child labourer was hit with an iron rod allegedly by a brick kiln owner in Gulbarga.
The Commission said it has issued notices to the two states asking them to submit their report within two weeks after taking suo-motu cognizance of media reports in the case.
The 12-year-old child labourer hails from Bolangir district of Odisha and is in danger of losing his left hand while undergoing treatment at VVS Medical College and Hospital because of the severe attack, it said.
The reports also highlight the miseries of other migrant labourers from Odisha in Karnataka who are victimised by touts and brick kiln owners due to lack of effective action by the state authorities.
The Commission observed that "the contents of the media reports, if true, raises serious human rights issues" and issued notices to the Chief Secretaries of Karnataka and Odisha.
