NHRC notice to Safdarjung hospital

New Delhi: Taking serious congnisance of an RTI reply, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to Safdarjung hospital, one of the largest government hospitals in the country, over large number of child deaths in last five years.  

The Commission has issued notices to Union Health Ministry and Medical Superintendent of the hospital and sought their replies within four weeks. 

RTI activist Rajhans Bansal had filed an RTI application seeking reply on the deaths of children in the hospital between 2008 and 2012. 

The RTI reply revealed that a total of 8,209 children had died between 2008 and 2012 in the hospital. Out of this big number, 3,000 were new born. 100 children died due to malnutrition. The reply also revealed that five out of the 18 ventilators in the hospital were not functioning.  

A similar instance was reported in Delhi’s Chacha Nehru hospital where over 4,500 children had died in last five years.
