KOZHIKODE: The district administration, here, is all set to make Kozhikode a child-friendly district. The move is to effectively enforce laws related to child rights and child protection by coordinating various government departments.

As part of the initiative, awareness programmes will be organized for government officials on childrens' rights. The move is in the backdrop of the rising number of child abuse cases.

"Stringent action will be taken against those who abuse children," said district collector C A Latha. Awareness boards will be installed at all important places in the district including bus stands, railway stations, and tourism destinations. The boards will contain the toll-free number of Childline and punishment for child abuse.

There will also be special training programmes for parents and teachers to prevent abuse against disabled children, said the district collector. Special sessions will be held to make officials aware of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

Besides, special programmes will also be organized under the aegis of Integrated Child Development Service and Child Development Project office. Special focus will be given on the punishments for child sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and child marriage.
