Four children drown in quarry

BHOPAL: Four children drowned in a water-filled quarry near a brick kiln in Bilkhiria village of Bhopal on Monday afternoon. The dead include two girls.

Police said the dead have been identified as Subham, 7, son of Babulal, Ashu, 6, son of Liladhar, Gullu, 15, Sheela, 10, daughters of Liladhar, residents of Gyaraspur village in Vidisha district.

Both Babulal and Liladhar work as labourers and live in a makeshift shanty near the kiln. The children went to take bath in a nearby open quarry. When two girl saw the boys Anshu and Subham drowning, they jumped into the water to save the two lost lives.

Sources said locals came to know about the incident only after they found two other children sitting for long. This led local residents to ask the children. When the kids told them about it, they got suspicious and jumped into the water and fished out the bodies.

Bodies were taken to Hamida Hospital for postmortem.
